Winged Cherub Fountain Bowl with Grotesque Masks
The most figurative carving we hold, photographed running. A winged cherub is carved at the springing of a scalloped upper bowl whose rim breaks into shell lobes, above a collar of deep acanthus leaves. At the foot of the stem, grotesque masks with open mouths are set between carved leaves. Below, the lower bowl shows a rope and gadroon rim with water sheeting across it. The limestone has taken a dark patina in the flutes and undercuts while the exposed faces stayed warm. Suited to courtyards, terraces and architectural restoration work.
